The Psychology Of Language And Communication

The Psychology Of Language And Communication

by Geoffrey Beattie (Author), Andrew W Ellis (Author)

This is a classic edition of Geoffrey Beattie’s and Andrew Ellis’ influential introduction to the psychology of human language and communication, now including a new reflective introduction from the authors. Drawing on elements from many sub-disciplines, including cognitive and social psychology, psycholinguistics and neuropsychology, the book offers an approach which breaches conventional disciplinary boundaries. Exploring the diverse nature of communication, Beattie and Ellis focus on the range of human communicative channels and the variations which occur both between and within societies and cultures.

Written from an informative and entertaining historical perspective, The Psychology of Language and Communication remains a key resource for anyone interested in the psychology of communication, language and linguistics, 30 years on from its first publication.

Intercultural Communication With China: Beyond (reverse) Essentialism And Culturalism? (encounters Between East And West)

Intercultural Communication With China: Beyond (reverse) Essentialism And Culturalism? (encounters Between East And West)

A major objective of this book is to identify the key determinants of the “East” and the “West” in the field of intercultural communication. It examines but also counter-attacks essentialist and culturalist analyses of intercultural communication between China and the rest of the world. Offering a cross-country examination and comparison of drought awareness and experience, this book shows two fields of research, which are complementary but rarely found side by side, i.e. the Arts and Intercultural Encounters, serve as illustrations for theoretical and methodological discussions about intercultural communication between China and the West. Scholarly and media discourses will find this work thought-provoking, instructive and informative.

Studying Animal Languages Without Translation: An Insight From Ants

Studying Animal Languages Without Translation: An Insight From Ants

The Author of this new volume on ant communication demonstrates that information theory is a valuable tool for studying the natural communication of animals. To do so, she pursues a fundamentally new approach to studying animal communication and “linguistic” capacities on the basis of measuring the rate of information transmission and the complexity of transmitted messages.

Animals’ communication systems and cognitive abilities have long-since been a topic of particular interest to biologists, psychologists, linguists, and many others, including researchers in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence. The main difficulties in the analysis of animal language have to date been predominantly methodological in nature. Addressing this perennial problem, the elaborated experimental paradigm presented here has been applied to ants, and can be extended to other social species of animals that have the need to memorize and relay complex “messages”. Accordingly, the method opens exciting new dimensions in the study of natural communications in the wild.

English For Professional Journalism And Advance Communication

English For Professional Journalism And Advance Communication

The linguistic choices we make when we want to communicate (journalistic writings inclusive) go a long way to affect both the effectiveness and success of the communication process. In every communication activity, the intention of the communicator and the context of discourse dictate the choices of linguistic items to be made as well as their use.

This text provides guides for both the professional journalist and the individual involved in advance communication on the standard set of professional linguistic choices, linguistic items and patterns, and usage thereby promoting professionalism.
