The Ilyushin DB-3/IL-4 was an important Soviet medium bomber during the Second World War. Not only was it a multi-role aircraft, carrying out maritime torpedo bombing and transport duties in addition to its designed role as a level bomber, but aircraft of this type carried out the first bombing raids of Berlin by Soviet aircraft during WW2. Hans-Heiri Stapfer does a good job chronicling the history and technical development of this aircraft in "Ilyushin Il-4 in Action." Like most Squadron/Signal publications, the book comes with a wealth of photographs, two three view-line drawings, a page of color prints, and sample illustrations. Stapfer starts the book chronologically with the development of the TsKB-30 prototype before moving on to the initial production DB-3 model, culminating in the final IL-4 production model. Different models are discussed and illustrations are provided showing differences between versions.
