At the center of ancient Rome stood a monument called the Milliarium Aureum, or Golden Milestone. Although its exact location is now lost to the ages, the column marked the center of the Roman Empire and the end point of a vast network of roads that stretched for almost 250,000 miles (402,336 km). At regular intervals along these roads, milestones were placed to allow travelers to track the distance along their journey.
